The Reverend is an original sail barge, built around 1900. Where the ship was built and when exactly is not known. The Reverend has been brought back under sail in 2007 and ingetimmerd in an atmospheric way. The flatboat denotes very close to the water, making the experience of sailing is much more intense. The sail barge was originally a farmers ship. At the end of the 18 e and the beginning of the last century the roads in Friesland were very poor and farmers used the boats as a means of transport between the fields and the farm. Like skûtsjes the barges were first built of wood, to be made more and more steel around the turn of the century. The hull of a barge can be compared with that of a skûtsje, only and without even lower deck and superstructure. As a result, the barges were very light, and they could be very shallow in the water. Ideal for transport through narrow, shallow ditches and canals. With the barges could be sailed, but more often they were moved by means of trees. In the middle of the last century sailing and trees gradually replaced by pushing with motor boats. However, there were still races sailed in the sailing barges.
